Hamden (WTNH) - A man who aimed a loaded rifle at an officer is behind bars after leading police on an early morning man hunt in Hamden.

The man hunt, involving K-9 units and the state police helicopter Trooper 1, started around 11:00 p.m. when two Hamden police officers patrolling the East Street area encountered a person they thought looked suspicious.

When officers approached him he aimed the rifle at them. An officer was able to get some distance and fired back, missing the suspect who then ran off.

"After the initial altercation with the individual we set up a perimeter, we deployed a K-9 unit," said Chief Thomas Wydra, Hamden Police Department. "We requested help from the state police, and Trooper 1 responded, provided aerial support and we were able to arrest the individual and locate the .223 rifle."

Police found the man in a house in the area.

The name of that individual has not yet been released.

"He was walking in a residential neighborhood with a loaded rifle. Clearly we want to know why," Chief Wydra said.

Police were planning to question the suspect and people in the neighborhood.
